Max Jenke Interview
マックス・ジェンケにメールにてインタビューを行った。どんな返答文が返ってくるのか多少の不安もありつつ・・・何故なら彼はあの悪ガキ集団（？）"Wildcats"のメンバーでもあるからだ。
しかしながらそんな不安を吹き飛ばしてくれるかのように、一問一答、丁寧な答えを返してくれたぞ。
基本的な質問からendeavorを立ち上げるに至るまでの経緯などについても聞いてみたのでチェックしてちょーだい。

幼少期はどんな子供だった？
- 両親はオレのことを"little shit"（クソガキ）って呼んでたんだ。小僧だったからね。
最初の子供だったってのもあって、いつも好き勝手やってたよ。今日の今でも小僧みたいなもんだけどね！
What were you like when you were a kid?
- My parents used to call me a "little shit", cause I was a brat. I was the first child, so I always wanted to get my way...I guess I'm still a brat today!

スノーボードを始めたきっかけは何？ - 学校の友達がみんなウィスラーでスキーをしてたから、週末は自分もみんなと行きたかった。 クソみたいなスキーヤーとは一緒にされたくなかったから、新しくてもっと面白そうだったから始めたんだ。 How did you start snowboarding? - My friends at school all skied in Whistler, and I wanted to go up with them on the weekends. I didn't want to tag along as the shitty skier, so I picked up something new that seemed more interesting to me. その頃、誰と一緒に滑ってたの？ - 学校の友達と。ただの週末ボーダーだったから。 そしてOptionだったロブ・ダウと、ウィスラーで会ったディオン・デルサーレと滑り始めた。 その後は仲間がデヴァン・ウォルシュとか、今でも一緒に滑っている他の仲間たちを紹介してくれたんだ。 Who did you snowboard with, when you first started? - I snowboarded with my friends from school, because I only went on the weekends. Then I started riding with Rob Dow, who was on Option, and Dionne Delesalle, who I met up in Whistler. After that, those guys introduced me to Devun and the rest of the riders who I ride with today. |
当時、影響を受けたライダーは？
- 最初に衝撃だったのはクレイグ・ケリー。
オレが13歳のときスキーショーで直筆サインをもらったことを覚えている。
その後はマーク・モリセットや、ローン・ロジャース、デイル・リバーグなどのライダー達。
Who were the riders that you were influenced by, when you first started snowboarding?
- The first rider who inspired me was Craig Kelly. I remember when I was 13 getting his autograph at the ski show.
After that, it was riders like Marc Morriset, Roan Rogers, and Dale Rehberg. Now, it's my friends.
プロライダーになろうと思ったきっかけは何？いつ頃プロを意識するようになったの？
- スポンサーが付くことはいつだって夢だったよ。
キッズならみんな夢みることさ。雑誌で取り上げられ、タダで服も貰える、とかね。
オレはスポンサーをしてくれる会社がオレに、そのレベルになるよう望んだから、プロになったのさ。
ある日の決断でプロになったんじゃなくて、徐々に成長した先がプロっていうところに到達しただけさ。
Why did you become a pro snowboarder? And when did you start thinking about becoming a pro?
- Being sponsored was always a dream...I think it's any kids dream, looking through the magazines, getting free clothing, etc.
I became a pro snowboarder when the companies I was riding for wanted to put me at that level...it was something that just progressed into that title,
not a decision to turn pro one day.

プロライダーになって良かった事、辛かった事は？
- どんなレベルにおいてでも、プロフェッショナルである以上、良い事と悪い事がある。
スノーボードのプロであるなら、タダで製品が手に入るし、雑誌に広告が載るし、会社の方針に影響も与える。
それに素晴らしい経験もするさ（世界中をスノーボードで旅するようなね。）
悪い事は、プレッシャーのなかで滑らなければならないこと、一年中冬が続くこと、それとケガ、ケガ、ケガがね！
What are the good things, and bad things, about being a pro?
- Being a professional at any levels has it goods and bads.
Being a snowboarding pro, you get free product, ads in the magazines, influence on the direction of companies, and experiences that are amazing
(I've travelled the world through snowboarding).
The bad things are the pressure to perform, having a winter that lasts all year, and injuries, injuries, injuries!
スノーボードで、今まででした大きなケガは何？何故それは起こったの？
- 同じ膝の靭帯を3回も切ってしまったこと。その全てがランディング時にフラット落ちをたくさんしすぎちゃって。
こんなに何回も繰り返したら本当に膝が壊れちまうよ！
What was the most serious injury you have had from snowboarding? How did it happen?
- I've torn my ACL three times in the same knee.
They all happened from landing flat too many times. Your knee can only do it so much before it gives out!
自己ベストな大会成績は？
- 大会は自分にとってあまり重要じゃないから解らないなぁ。確か、Jr. World Championshipsのハーフパイプで9位だったかな。
In which competition, or games, did you make the best result? And what place were you in?
- I don't know, cause competiting really isn't my thing. I think the Jr. World Championships in halfpipe, I got 9th place.
冬の間は主にどこでスノーボードしてるの？
- 主にバンクーバーとウィスラーをベースにしてる。ウィスラーはマウント・シーモアやグルースのように地元の山だしね。
Where do you usually snowboard during the winter?
- I'm usually based out of Vancouver and Whistler, so that means Whistler and the local mountains, like Mt. Seymour and Grouse.
夏の間は何してるの？
- 夏の間は、ヨーロッパに旅行へ行ったり、Paavo(パボ・ティッカネン)とブラブラしてるよ。
スノーボードを少しやったり、酒を飲みまくってたり。
今年の夏はオレの彼女が住んでいるニュージーランドに行ってそれから中国とバリに旅行したよ。
What do you do during the summer?
- During the summer I'll usually travel to Europe and mess around with Paavo, snowboarding a little and drinking a lot.
This summer, I spent traveling down to New Zealand where my girlfriend lives and then to China and Bali!
オフは何してるの？
- ENDEAVORを立ち上げてからは、時間があればその事ばっかりだね。
What do you do when you don't snowboard?
- Since we've started Endeavor, every spare minute seems to be devoted to that.
主に誰と一緒に滑ってるの？
- たいていはウィスラーのルームメイト、TriniやJon達か、ワイルドキャットと滑ってるね。
Who do you usually snowboard with?
- I usually ride with my room mates in Whistler (Trini, Jon, etc.) or the 'Cats.
続いてendeavorについて聞きたいんだけど・・・。
Random Snowboardsを離れ、World Industriesと契約し、知らぬ間にLogic Snowboardsに乗っていた。
endeavor発足までの経緯を教えてよ。
- World(Industries)がスノープログラムから手を引いた時、オレはどうしたら良いのか解らなかった。
魅力的なスポンサーは無かったし、オレと同じ考えの会社はなかった。
ロブ・ダウや友達の何人かがオレにアイデアをくれたんだ。自分達のスノーボード・カンパニーを持つって夢を現実にするね。
Next question is about endeavor snowboards.
You left Random and then signed with World Industries, and we didn't know you were riding Logic Snowboards.
What was the story for launching endeavor snowboards?
- When World pulled the plug on their snow program, I didn't know what to do.
No sponsors seemed attractive to me, no one's companies represented what I wanted to say.
It was a couple of my friends, including Rob Dow, who put the idea in my head to make our dream of having a snowboard company a reality.
Endeavorって名前に決めた理由は？
- オレ達のクリエイティブ・ディレクター、ランディ・ロスが名付けの親さ。
辞書の中の意味では、「何かを成し遂げるまじめな努力。」ってなっている。
それは正にオレ達がやっている事、このクレイジーな業界でスノーボード・カンパニーを立ち上げようっていうね。
Why did you name "endeavor"?
- Randy Ross, our creative director, came up with the name.
In the dictionary it says: an earnest effort to achieve something.
That is what we are doing...trying to make a snowboard company in this crazy industry.

カナディアン・スーパーモデルのNoot Seearがグラフィックにされているけど？いきさつは？ （詳しくはSBJレポートへ） - 評判が良かったんだ。オレが思うに美しい女性がボードに描かれてるのってみんな好きだろ。 昔Cody Dresserが Evol Boards でやっていたのと同じことだよ。 グラフィックに今時のスーパーモデルを使うことで、スノーボード業界以外の人にももっと知ってもらう為でもあったんだ。 こういうボードのコレクターが出てくるかもよ！？ Canadian super model Noot Seear is designed on the graphic, but how did this come across? - The response was good. I think people like boards with beautiful women on them, similar to how Cody Dresser had his Evol boards back in the day. We also put her on the board to gain recognition outside of snowboarding as having an up and coming super model on our graphics. Those boards may become a collectors item! |
日本には何回来てるの？
- 3回行ったよ。最初はNorthweaveの奴らと北の島、札幌国際へ。
2回目はDubの奴らと本州へ、アクシオムやハイツとかね。
一番最近はワイルドキャッツと行って、白馬で少し遊んだ以外は前とだいたい同じ感じ。
How many times have you been to Japan?
- I've been three times. The fist time I went with Northwave to Sapporo Koksi on the North Island.
The second time I went with Dub all around the main Island, to Axiom, Heights, etc.
The last time I went over with the Wildcats, and we did pretty much the same, except we hung out in Hakuba for a little while.
日本の何が好き？
- 食べ物。日本食だけでも生きていけるよ。ハイツのパークはいつも好きで、超楽しいね！
東京も同じように凄く楽しい。日本語を話せるように勉強したいよ。
What do you like about Japan?
- The food. I could live on a Japanese diet. I also like the park at Heights, it's super fun.
Tokyo is a lot of fun as well. I'd like to learn how to speak the language.

- 「Nine Lives」ってワイルドキャットのビデオ。
What will be the next video to be released?
- the Wildcats are releasing a movie called Nine Lives.
